HELP US RAISE $ 20,000

Grassroots Organization Needs Your Support

To Ship Thousands of Books and Other Library Materials

To the Caribbean and Latin America

Stratford, CT.- Dedicate volunteers have crisscrossed the Fairfield County to help UNESCO Center for Global Friendship, Inc.(UCGF) with its first book drive.

Their efforts have paid off as they have collected twice the number of books that they expected their initiative would net.

“We have received 8,000 English, Spanish and French books, computers and printers during a month-long campaign for our literacy programs that support free community and school libraries in Haiti, Jamaica and Nicaragua,” reported an exuberant Angelucci Manigat, Jr., the executive director of UCGF.

“We are very grateful to our fellow socially responsible neighbors whose diligence and generosity helped us surpass our goal this year,” Manigat added.

The donations came mostly from residents of Stratford, Trumbull, Fairfield, Bridgeport, Westport, Norwalk and Stamford. The support of institutions and organizations such as Darien Book Aid, New Haven Reads, Norwalk Public Library, UConn Library Stamford Campus, Haitian American Professionals Association of Connecticut, Inc. and International Alliance for the Advancement of Children, Inc. has greatly contributed to the success of this book drive.

We are now in the second phase of this project, which is to raise $20,000 to get the collected library materials to their intended destinations by this summer.

Based in Stratford, UNESCO Center for Global Friendship, Inc. is a tax-exempt non-profit organization, officially recognized by the U.S. Federation of UNESCO Clubs, Centers and Associations. It develops cultural programs for libraries in the United States, and provides educational materials to underprivileged book lovers in the Caribbean and Latin America.

Haitian School to get Its First Library After More Than 60 Years of Existence

Port-au-Prince, Haiti.- After more than sixty years of existence, Ėcole Nationale République du Paraguay – an elementary school in Port-au-Prince – is getting ready to have its first library.

The UNESCO Center for Global Friendship, Inc. (UCGF), headquartered in Connecticut, is working hard to provide this school with a library appropriate to the needs of the 1200 students it serves. In a book drive conducted earlier this year, UCGF has collected for this purpose 3,000 books, a dozen computers and various audiovisual materials.

It is now stepping up its efforts to raise funds to cover the shipping cost, the set-up of a multi-art room, and the installation of a computer network in the facility. These expenses are estimated at $ 10,000. “During a recent visit at the school, I realized that we had to start from scratch in this project,” said Angelucci Manigat, Jr., the executive director of UNESCO Center for Global Friendship, Inc.

While we are actively fund raising, we are also encouraging the formation of a committee of parents, teachers and students and alumni of “Paraguay”, which main purpose will be to support the activities of the school.

Ėcole Nationale République du Paraguay is a public school that has educated some of the brightest minds of the country. However, it lacks many basic necessities, including seats for its students.

UNESCO Center for Global Friendship, Inc. (UCGF) is a non-profit organization officially recognized by the State of Connecticut and the U.S. Federation of Centers, Clubs and Associations of UNESCO. Its mission is to build cultural bridges, facilitate the exchange of ideas and free access to credible information.

In the United States, UCGF develops and organizes programs that value the importance of cultural diversity. In disadvantaged countries, it provides educational materials and technical assistance to libraries.
