HELP US RAISE $ 20,000

Grassroots Organization Needs Your Support

To Ship Thousands of Books and Other Library Materials

To the Caribbean and Latin America

Stratford, CT.- Dedicate volunteers have crisscrossed the Fairfield County to help UNESCO Center for Global Friendship, Inc.(UCGF) with its first book drive.

Their efforts have paid off as they have collected twice the number of books that they expected their initiative would net.

“We have received 8,000 English, Spanish and French books, computers and printers during a month-long campaign for our literacy programs that support free community and school libraries in Haiti, Jamaica and Nicaragua,” reported an exuberant Angelucci Manigat, Jr., the executive director of UCGF.

“We are very grateful to our fellow socially responsible neighbors whose diligence and generosity helped us surpass our goal this year,” Manigat added.

The donations came mostly from residents of Stratford, Trumbull, Fairfield, Bridgeport, Westport, Norwalk and Stamford. The support of institutions and organizations such as Darien Book Aid, New Haven Reads, Norwalk Public Library, UConn Library Stamford Campus, Haitian American Professionals Association of Connecticut, Inc. and International Alliance for the Advancement of Children, Inc. has greatly contributed to the success of this book drive.

We are now in the second phase of this project, which is to raise $20,000 to get the collected library materials to their intended destinations by this summer.

Based in Stratford, UNESCO Center for Global Friendship, Inc. is a tax-exempt non-profit organization, officially recognized by the U.S. Federation of UNESCO Clubs, Centers and Associations. It develops cultural programs for libraries in the United States, and provides educational materials to underprivileged book lovers in the Caribbean and Latin America.

Haitian School to get Its First Library After More Than 60 Years of Existence

Port-au-Prince, Haiti.- After more than sixty years of existence, Ėcole Nationale République du Paraguay – an elementary school in Port-au-Prince – is getting ready to have its first library.

The UNESCO Center for Global Friendship, Inc. (UCGF), headquartered in Connecticut, is working hard to provide this school with a library appropriate to the needs of the 1200 students it serves. In a book drive conducted earlier this year, UCGF has collected for this purpose 3,000 books, a dozen computers and various audiovisual materials.

It is now stepping up its efforts to raise funds to cover the shipping cost, the set-up of a multi-art room, and the installation of a computer network in the facility. These expenses are estimated at $ 10,000. “During a recent visit at the school, I realized that we had to start from scratch in this project,” said Angelucci Manigat, Jr., the executive director of UNESCO Center for Global Friendship, Inc.

While we are actively fund raising, we are also encouraging the formation of a committee of parents, teachers and students and alumni of “Paraguay”, which main purpose will be to support the activities of the school.

Ėcole Nationale République du Paraguay is a public school that has educated some of the brightest minds of the country. However, it lacks many basic necessities, including seats for its students.

UNESCO Center for Global Friendship, Inc. (UCGF) is a non-profit organization officially recognized by the State of Connecticut and the U.S. Federation of Centers, Clubs and Associations of UNESCO. Its mission is to build cultural bridges, facilitate the exchange of ideas and free access to credible information.

In the United States, UCGF develops and organizes programs that value the importance of cultural diversity. In disadvantaged countries, it provides educational materials and technical assistance to libraries.

Holocaust Remembrance Event

The UNESCO Center for Global Friendship, Inc. (UCGF), conjointly with the Fairfield Public Library, the Jewish Historical Society of Fairfield County and the Federation for Jewish Philanthropy of Upper Fairfield County, will hold an event honoring the victims of the Holocaust on Monday, January 27, 2020, 6:00 p.m. at the Fairfield Public Library Main Branch, in Connecticut.

This commemoration will feature the free screening of the film Who Will Write Our History. It documents not only how the Jews of the ghetto died, but also how they lived. Live testimonies and discussions will follow the movie. Refreshments will be served as well.

“As this date marks the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the UNESCO Center for Global Friendship wants to stand firmly against antisemitism, racism, and other forms of bigotry that can lead to group-targeted violence,” explains Angelucci Manigat, Jr., the Executive Director of UCGF.  “ All our programs aim to foster cultural awareness, mutual respect, solidarity and intellectual honesty to make the world a better place,” adds Manigat.

Connecticut Organizations to Celebrate International Women’s Day in Stamford

UNESCO Center for Global Friendship, Inc., conjointly with the Ferguson Library, will hold an evening of life-saving information and live entertainment in celebration of International Women’s Day, March 8, at 6:30 p.m. at the Ferguson Library South End Branch, in Stamford.

“The goal of our event is to amplify creative voices of extraordinary women of diverse walks of life and to inform on available resources for women,” explains Angelucci Manigat, Jr., the Executive Director of UNESCO Center for Global Friendship, Inc. (UCGF). Incidentally this year, as a global movement is pressing for gender equality, the U.N.’s theme for this worldwide celebration is “Time is now: Rural and urban activists transforming women’s lives.”

This free activity will feature keynote speakers who work for local organizations that empower women. Stephanie Dieudonne, from the International Institute of Connecticut, and Jessica Feighan, from the Center for Sexual Assault Crisis and Education, are among the special guests who will address the audience that night. Fairfield County-based musicians and poets will perform as well.

In many countries, the International Women’s Day is treated almost as a holiday. The origin of this tradition can be traced back from the early 20th century. Observed for the first time in the United States in 1909, it is the offspring of the garment workers strike that took place in New York City the year before by women rebuffing deplorable working conditions. In 1975, the United Nations began celebrating International Women’s Day on March 8.

The UNESCO Center for Global Friendship, Inc. is a 501(C) (3) non-profit organization, officially recognized by the U.S. Federation of UNESCO Clubs, Centers and Associations. It develops free cultural programs for U.S. libraries, and provides educational materials and professional assistance to libraries in underdeveloped countries.

The Ferguson Library South End Branch, which is located at 34 Woodland Avenue, Stamford, CT 06902, hosts throughout the year a variety of programs that promote cultural diversity.

United Nations’ Offspring In Full Gear in Connecticut

Bridgeport, CT. – In this time of escalating wars, belligerent talks of divine borderlines and lack of cultural sensibilities, a group of concerned residents of the tristate area dared acting upon their dream of a more amiable world by founding the UNESCO Center for Global Friendship, Inc. (UCGF).

Formally recognized by the U.S. Federation of UNESCO Clubs, Centers and Associations earlier this year, UCGF is a non-profit organization dedicated to build cultural bridges and create a more informed public by disseminating factual data about national and world problems as well as the activities of international organizations.  About 4,000 such groups are actively promoting the United Nations Educational, Scientific, Cultural Organizations’ values and principles worldwide.

“We provide educational materials and professional assistance to libraries in under-developed countries, and help develop free cultural programs, such as book fairs, lectures, cultural festivals and art exhibits, for American libraries”, explains Angelucci Manigat, Jr., the executive director of UCGF.

“We make cultural memory and diversity the forefront of our activities, as we celebrate major international days observed by UNESCO, including Holocaust Day, International Women Day, World Press Freedom Day, Friendship Day, Slavery Remembrance Day and AIDS Day,” adds Manigat.

This newly-formed United Nations’ offspring is actively looking for partnership with libraries, community media outlets, schools, museums and other organizations that share its goals. UCGF’s founding members such as Angelucci Manigat, Jr., Johnny Tranquille and Robert Pierre had successfully undertaken this kind of initiatives in the past to promote the ideals of UNESCO.

Sponsorship opportunities and individual membership to the UNESCO Center for Global Friendship, Inc. are available at a low cost. Members will receive exclusive web content, invitations to events across the U.S., at the United Nations in New York and throughout the world. They will also be linked to a network of like-minded individuals and organizations that collectively promote the work of UNESCO and other UN agencies at the grassroots level. Additionally, members will be offered leadership skill development and humanitarian work opportunities year-round through volunteer programs in U.S. and abroad.
